Purgatorio Canto XIV

The iron rod is the Divine Authority of the Holy Roman Emperor. The iron curb is the Divine Law of the Holy Roman Emperor - the Justinian Codex. The iron rod was sent by the Blessed Trinity to rule all nations: ‘I will rule all nations with an iron rod.’ Instead men rejected this iron rod & iron curb and took up the harsh yoke of ‘the Adversary-the Devil’. The harsh yoke of ‘your Adversary-the Devil’ is factionalism (ethno-nationalism) or modern democracy.

But you men take the bait, swallow the hook,
and let the Adversary reel you in –
and neither rein nor spur avails for you

The punishment for embracing the yoke of ‘your Adversary-the Devil’-modern democracy is that the laws of godless democracy (the rein or spur) will not avail for you because the laws of modern democracy are not founded on True Justice, they are man made laws that reject Divine Providence and therefore are of no avail. Any one can see this. Modern democratic laws do not curb mans corrupt passions instead these corrupt laws remove all hindrances so that modern man can freely engage in his corrupt passions.

Dante tells us here that modern men ignore the Divine Plan of governing the world:

The heavens wheeling round you call to you,
revealing their eternal beauties – yet,
you keep your eyes fixed on the ground alone

…engaging in your corrupt passions…until as Dante admonishes: 'and He, the All-Discerning, strikes you down.' Our Lady confirms these words of the Divine Poet of the Divine punishment to come for rejecting the Divine Plan for governing the world in Her message of La Salette: ‘with the first blow of His Thundering Sword all the earth will tremble’
