"Why is there so much hate, why this violence? I don't hold resentment against anybody, I want the best for everybody. If I'd been hit a bit higher up, I could have lost an eye." Silvio Berlusconi

There is so much symbolism couched in the attack on Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi ~ Anushay Hossain

Anushay Hossain's Blog The Symbolism Behind The Blood Of Berlusconi

Ms. Hossain is correct symbolism does surround the Berlusconi incident. One of the major representative heads of modern democracy was humiliated on the feast day of St. Lucia. Dante chooses Saint Lucy as his special patron saint in the Divine Comedy. Saint Lucy is mentioned three times in the Divine Comedy:

Inferno Canto II

Purgatorio Canto IX

Paradisio Canto XXXII

According to Dante scholar Ruggiero Stefanini (d 2005) Saint Lucia is a figure of the Universal Empire in the Divine Comedy. He does this based on the actions of Saint Lucy in the Divine Comedy & Liturgy of the Church, he points out that Psalm 44 Dilexisti iustitiam ‘Thou hast loved justice, and hated iniquity’ is found both in the Coronation Mass for the Holy Roman Emperor and is found in the Introit & Gradual of the Mass of St. Lucia. Stefanini states that Dilexisti iustitiam has “become a kind of Imperial motto” He draws the conclusion that since both liturgies contain the same Psalm, Imperial authority and Saint Lucy are interconnected. This liturgical connection is the reason why Dante chooses Saint Lucy to symbolically represent Roman Imperial Authority. Stefanini says that the first to act must be the Empire (not the Church); so, Divine Mercy (Mary) sends Lucy, precisely because she represents the supreme political authority (I tre sogni)

Saint Lucy representing true political action of Imperial Authority is called by the Blessed Mother to intercede on Dante’s behalf. Beatrice representing Lady Wisdom tells Virgil that she was sent by Saint Lucy:

In Heaven there's a gentle lady-one
who weeps for the distress toward which I send you,
so that stern judgment up above is shattered.
And it was she who called upon Lucia,
requesting of her: "Now your faithful one
has need of you, and I commend him to you."
Lucia, enemy of every cruelty,
arose and made her way to where I was,
sitting beside the venerable Rachel.
Inferno canto ii

Saint Lucy representing the Imperial Empire transports Dante during his sleep to the gate of purgatory:

You have already come to Purgatory:
see there the rampart wall enclosing it;
see, where that wall is breached, the point of entry.
Before, at dawn that ushers in the day,
when soul was sleeping in your body, on
the flowers that adorn the ground below,
a lady came; she said: 'I am Lucia;
let me take hold of him who is asleep,
that I may help to speed him on his way.'
Sordello and the other noble spirits
stayed there; and she took you, and once the day
was bright, she climbed-I following behind.
And here she set you down, but first her lovely
eyes showed that open entryway to me;
then she and sleep together took their leave."
Purgatory ix

“Moore, in an essay first published in 1917, commented, ‘The prominence given to Saint Lucia in the Divina Commedia, both in the actions attributed to her and the exalted position assigned to her in Heaven, has scarcely, I think been sufficiently explained.” ~ Rachel Jacoff & William A Stephany

All the more reason to listen to Stefanini. Many reasons for Dante in choosing Saint Lucy as his patron saint in the Divine Comedy are listed in the Jacoff/Stephany book on Canto II.

Well December 13, 2009 was a day to remember for all of Italy. The Imperial force behind the Imperial motto Dilexisti iustitiam will one day conquer all of Europe. Thou hast loved justice, and hated iniquity: Thou has loved justice of the Imperial Authority and hated the iniquity of Democracy. Silvio Berlusconi you best pay attention! Give thanks to Saint Lucy for protecting and perserving you from further harm. Reconsider the events - modern democracy is at a cross roads.
