Pope's September prayer intention: For protecting the oceans

Oceans contain the bulk of our planet’s water supply, and also most of the immense variety of living creatures, many of them are threatened for various reasons. Creation is a project of love given by God to humanity. Our solidarity with the “common home” is born from our faith. Let us pray this month that politicians, scientists and economists work together to protect the world’s seas and oceans. Source

No escape from dive boat inferno: The bunk beds where 34 died after being trapped below deck by fire as captain frantically told rescuers 'they can't get out' and 'there's no escape hatch' 

This is the space where people slept on the ill-fated three-day diving expedition aboard Conception where at least 25 have died and more are feared dead. Nine others are still missing after a tragic boat fire early Monday near an island off the Southern California coast. The dive-boat Conception, far out to sea in the middle of the night, became fully engulfed in flames as 30 passengers on a recreational scuba diving trip slept below deck. At least five crew members, who had separate sleeping quarters, survived. Source

The morning after Dorian: Apocalyptic scenes in the Bahamas as cars float in the streets, boats are thrown upside down and thousands are left without homes after 'catastrophic' storm obliterates island and kills five

Hurricane Dorian has killed at least five people and destroyed as many as 13,000 homes during its path of destruction through the Bahamas.    The catastrophic onslaught sent floodwaters up to the second floors of some buildings, trapped people in attics and led to others fleeing from one shelter to another.  Photos have captured just a glimpse of the devastation in the Bahamas. One image shows dozens of capsized boats at a harbor, while video shows stalled cars on flooded roads and completely destroyed homes.   One video shows Bahamians picking through debris as they try to salvage some of their belongings.  Dorian's relentless winds and rain battered homes and businesses on the islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama, which have a combined population of about 70,000 and are no more than 40 feet above sea level at their highest points.  The Grand Bahama airport was said to be under 6 feet of water. The exact toll of the devastation in the Bahamas will not be clear until the storm passes and rescue crews can get on the ground. The storm hovered over the islands for almost 24 hours.   Bahamas prime minister Hubert Minnis said: 'We are in the midst of a historic tragedy. The devastation is unprecedented and extensive.'  Source
