Armed Providence man accused of threatening group at church whose pastor faces pornography charges

An armed Providence man is accused of threatening a group of people, including a priest, outside a Providence church where a priest facing child pornography charges served as pastor. William Nesbitt, 28, allegedly threatened the group of 10 people at St. Mary's Church Roman Catholic Church, because they were still attending the church after the priest's arrest, according to Providence Police Commander Thomas Verdi. Nesbitt is accused of showing a gun during the incident which happened around 8 p.m. as the people were standing outside the church at 538 Broadway, according to Verdi.

The group had gathered outside after Mass when Nesbitt approached them and started "yelling at the group to get out of here, and that they support child molesters," an alleged victim told police, according to a police report. "It was at this time Nesbitt, lifted his shirt and made visible a black firearm," the report said. The group tried to walk away, but Nesbitt followed closely behind them, yelling obscenities and threatening them, the police report said. As police officers arrived, Nesbitt ran away, the alleged victim told the police.

Nesbitt went into his apartment at 530 Broadway but was arrested without incident, according to the police. The police obtained a search warrant and recovered a 9mm handgun and ammunition, according to Verdi."The officers involved did a very good job in a dangerous and potentially volatile situation," Verdi said. At least 13 police officers and detectives responded to the incident. Nesbitt was charged with illegal possession of a firearm and 10 counts of disorderly conduct; he's scheduled for arraignment later today, according to Verdi. On Saturday, the Rhode Island State Police arrested James Jackson, 66, pastor of St. Mary's Church. Jackson was charged with possessing and transferring child pornography, according to the state police. Source
