How Our Lord Appeared To The Two Disciples That Went To Emaus.

O foolish and slow of hart to believe. 

This reprehension of the most loving Master proceeded not from disdain, but from great love, he would not with these so sharp words, confound his doleful Disciples; but that they should enter into themselves and by knowing their error & infidelity should afterward be better disposed to understand the truth & the doctrine which he would teach them. 

Truly the Jews were fools to believe that without blood and without suffering they should be redeemed of Chriſt; especially since that the law by so many sacrifices prefigured no other, and the Prophets foretold nothing else, then the death of our Savior. 

But more foolish are they that seeing it was necessary that Christ our Lord should pass by the strait gate of tribulations and so enter into his glory, do presume that they may enter themselves without suffering. 

It would be great folly for a servant to refuse to enter by the same gate by the which his king is already entered. 

The inheritance is wont to pass unto the heirs with the encumbrances and burden: even so unto this inheritance of eternal glory is adjoined this burden of suffering; with this weight Christ first had it, and therefore it was necessary that he should suffer; with the ſame the Apostles had it, to whom our Lord foretold, that they should suffer nin the world persecution: and with this same also all the faithful had it, of whom the Apostle said: Omnes qui pie volunt viuere in Chriſto, perfecutionem patientur. 

All that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. 

They therefore that will without tribulation obtain blessedness, seem that they will be more worthy then Christ, more holy then the Apostles, and better then all other faithful people of God.
