Sinai plane crash: Four Theories 

Technical fault? Egypt's prime minister has said a technical fault was the most likely cause of the disaster, but that it would be up to the air accident investigators "to prove or deny this". Egypt's civil aviation minister Hossam Kamal said there had been no sign of any problems on board the flight, contradicting earlier reports that the pilot had asked to make an emergency landing after experiencing technical problems. Human error? The airline has said that the pilot - who reports identified as Valery Nemov - had more than 12,000 hours of flying experience, including 3,860 hours in A321s. Kogalymavia says it has ruled out "any mistake by the crew." But the aircraft's "black boxes" - the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) and the flight data recorder (FDR), both of which have been found - will provide investigators with detail on the last minutes of the flight and tell them whether any actions taken by the flight crew caused or contributed to the crash - which happened during fine weather. Shot down by missile?Security experts have poured scorn on claims from jihadis allied to the Islamic State (IS) group, who are active in the Sinai area, that they downed Flight KGL9268, but examinations of the aircraft wreckage and debris field will enable investigators to definitively pronounce on this theory. Bomb on board?
Analysing the aircraft's black boxes will help investigators determine what caused it to suddenly plummet from the sky. No hard evidence has emerged to suggest that a bomb on board the plane caused the crash - and there are questions about how a would-be bomber would evade heightened security measures around Sharm el-Sheikh airport - but one expert told the BBC that descriptions of the wreckage indicate that such an event remains a possibility. An aviation expert says footage claiming to show an ISIS group shot down a passenger plane over Egypt is 'laughable'.  Sinai Province, an affiliate of the terrorist group, yesterday said they were responsible for the Russian airliner crash that killed 224 people after leaving Sharm el-Sheik airport.  A poor quality video was released to back up the claim, which shows what appears to be a plane catching fire in mid-air before falling from the sky, trailed by black smoke.  But Steve Chadwick OBE, a former RAF commander with 26 years experience, has said the video not only shows the wrong type of plane, but also the wrong kind of fire.  He told Mirror Online: "It’s laughable that they might claim that is an Airbus 321. Metrojet exec says external impact caused Egypt plane crash

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) — Only an external impact could have caused a Russian plane to dive into the Egyptian desert, killing all 224 people on board, its Russian operator said Monday, adding to a series of confusing statements from investigators that left unclear why the plane broke up in mid-flight. In Washington, James Clapper, the U.S. director of national intelligence, said that while there is no direct evidence of any terrorist involvement yet, it couldn't be excluded that the plane was brought down by Islamic State extremists in Sinai. "It's unlikely, but I wouldn't rule it out," he told reporters in Washington. Metrojet, the Russian carrier that operated the crashed jet, firmly denied that the crash could have been caused by either equipment failure or pilot error. "The only possible explanation could be an external impact on the airplane," Metrojet's deputy director Alexander Smirnov told a news conference in Moscow. When pressed for more details about the type of impact and what could have caused it, Smirnov insisted that he was not at liberty to discuss details because the investigation was ongoing.
