The Presidents and the Patriarch: Dialogue conference kicks off in Lisbon 

Wednesday 15th May was the first day of the KAICIID ‘Transformative Dialogue’ conference, which is bringing together religious and political leaders in Lisbon, Portugal. An impressive array of speakers – including the Patriarch of Constantinople, the Imam of the Grand Mosque of Mecca, and three former European heads of state – addressed the conference, giving short talks of around ten minutes each. 

The power of dialogue 

Introducing the event, Dr Zuhair Alharthi, the Secretary General of KAICIID, stressed that dialogue is especially important given the climate of “growing distrust” in today’s world.Dr Heinz Fischer, the former President of Austria, spoke next, quoting the philosopher Karl Popper: “I can be right and you can be wrong, or I can be wrong and you can be right, but together we can approach the truth.” We then heard from Bartholemew I, Patriarch of Constantinople and head of the Eastern Orthodox Church. He noted the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s longstanding commitment to interreligious dialogue, particularly with regard to climate change – the fight against which, he said, is a “spiritual obligation.” Source

Pope prays Holy Spirit may create harmony for world peace 

Pope Francis renewed his ardent prayers for peace in our world, and end to all conflicts, recalling in particular suffering in the Holy Land, Ukraine, and the city of Kharkiv attacked two days ago. 

The harmony of the Holy Spirit 

After leading the recitation of the Regina Coeli prayer in St. Peter's Square, the Pope recalled that on this day, Pentecost Sunday, we remember how the Holy Spirit creates harmony out of different, and sometimes even conflicting realities. He called on everyone to pray that the Holy Spirit, "the Love of the Father and of the Son," may instil harmony in hearts, families, societies, and our entire world. 

Peace in our world 

The Pope prayed that the Holy Spirit may strengthen communion and fraternity among Christians of different traditions, and especially help leaders of nations to gain the courage to make efforts in favour of dialogue that lead to an end to wars. He lamented the many wars in our world today, mentioning in particular Ukraine and the city of Kharkiv which suffered an attack two days ago. The Pope prayed for peace in the Holy Land, Palestine, Israel, and the many places where wars are taking place. IRAN

Helicopter carrying Iranian President Raisi crashes, prompting massive search operation, local media reports

CNN — Rescuers are searching for a helicopter that crashed while carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in northern Iran on Sunday, according to Iranian officials. Raisi’s condition and that of Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, who was also on board, remain unknown as night falls and temperatures drop in the mountainous area. The aircraft came down in the early afternoon in Iran’s East Azerbaijan Province, sparking a massive search effort, including military drones and dozens of rescue teams, state media reported. But despite hours of searching, emergency crews so far appear unable to reach the crash site amid reported fog and extreme cold. Officials say they have been able to make contact with some of the passengers aboard the helicopter, raising hopes for the search-and-rescue mission’s success. Source
